Flame Fusion Method
The Flame Fusion method was the first successful process used to produce synthetic corundum. During production, manufacturers melt aluminum oxide with chromium at extremely high temperatures. The molten material cools quickly and forms ruby crystals within a few hours.
This process produces gemstones with excellent clarity and a bright appearance. However, rapid crystal growth often creates tiny gas bubbles and fewer natural inclusions than those found in natural rubies.
Flux Growth Method
The Flux Growth method requires more time and may take up to six months to complete. During this process, manufacturers place the minerals into a molten chemical solution called flux. They carefully control the temperature and pressure to encourage slow crystal growth.
As a result, Flux-grown rubies closely resemble natural rubies. They develop straight growth patterns and display characteristics similar to naturally formed gemstones.
