Manufacturing Process
Manufacturers produce Lab Created Rubies using two primary methods.
Flame Fusion Method
The Flame Fusion process was the first successful technique for producing synthetic corundum. During this process, manufacturers melt aluminum oxide with chromium at extremely high temperatures. As the material cools, ruby crystals form quickly.
This method creates gemstones with excellent clarity and a bright appearance. However, the rapid crystal growth may also produce tiny gas bubbles that help identify Flame Fusion rubies.
Flux Growth Method
The Flux Growth process takes much longer and can require up to six months. During production, manufacturers place the minerals inside a molten chemical solution known as flux. The crystals then grow slowly under carefully controlled heat and pressure.
As a result, Flux-grown rubies closely resemble natural rubies. They develop straight growth patterns and display characteristics similar to naturally formed gemstones.
